DIPLOMA DESCRIPTION

Diploma holders are able to demonstrate the competencies and knowledge required to be fully operational in different functions of the Rooms Division department, following the standards of a first-class hotel operation. Successful graduates have the capacity to successfully work independently in the front-office or housekeeping operations and are well-equipped to enter the industry and reach a supervisory position in a short period of time.

3 specialization options are possible at the Advanced level: Hotel Administration, Hotel Communications and Hotel Rooms Division.

CREDITS

60 credits US (20 credits US per term).

PROGRAM AIMS

Graduates of the Hotel Professional Diploma will be proficient in the following activities and will be distinguished by the following behaviors:

  • As hosts, they welcome guests according to an establishment’s guidelines, and they ensure that a hospitable customer experience is delivered.
  • They are aware of the importance of cleanliness, maintenance and laundry work as well as organizational tasks, including logistics for all back-of the-house activities.
  • They can effectively use a property management system. They can make reservations, perform check-ins and check-outs, establish bills and collect revenue.
  • They have mastered the principles of hygiene and occupational safety. They ensure that the value of premises, installations and appliances are preserved, and that energy and equipment are used economically.
  • They can prepare the food & beverage service, both in the daily service and for events, and can advise customers on appropriate beverages.

CERTIFICATES

Foundation – Focused on Rooms and Service, learners will acquire the fundamental hospitality-based skills necessary for working in a hotel. A blend of guided practical workshops and on-the-job application will help ensure the learner is work-ready upon completion of the certificate.

Intermediate – After having acquired the skills to operate independently in a hotel’s back-of-the-house, students will learn the skills needed to be successful at the front-desk to welcome guests. A blend of guided practical workshops and on-the-job application in a hospitality setting will allow the learners to put into practice the knowledge, competencies and skills they have acquired.

Advanced – After a full year of experience, the advanced certificate delivers the competencies needed for the learner to take on a supervisory role within a hotel.

  • Hotel Administration Specialization: This specialization focuses on administration duties carried out by the management team of a hotel, including the basics of accounting and an introduction to law. The knowledge acquired will be reinforced by guided practical workshops and on-the-job application. 
  • Hotel Communications Specialization: This specialization focuses on marketing and communication tools designed to attract customers in a hospitality environment. To complete the program, the skills learned will be reinforced byguided practical workshops and on-the-job application.
  • Hotel Rooms Division Specialization: This specialization focuses on the supervisory elements of Housekeeping and Front-Office Departments. To complete the program, the skills learned will be reinforced by guided practical workshops and on-the-job application.
